U Pick Apples (and More!) at Ochs Orchard

If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity, then try u pick apples at Ochs Orchard in Warwick, New York. Ochs Orchard has a u pick for every season of the year, so there’s never a bad time to visit.

Now you know we love a u pick farm. If you’ve been on my blog, you’ll find that a lot of my Florida content is all different kinds of u pick farms. We’ve done tons of u pick here from strawberries to pumpkins to blueberries to blackberries to vegetables to corn. Did I mention pumpkins? Even Christmas Trees!! We’ve also done apples and peaches in Virginia too.  While apple orchards aren’t very prevalent here in Florida, there are great places as you travel North that are. Like Ochs Orchard in Warwick, New York.

As a born New Yorker from the Bronx, we look at the map of New York a little differently than most. We start with the 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Next is Upstate New York which is basically anything within an hour to two hour drive from the 5 boroughs. Anything after that is considered New York state, and basically it's its own separate state. Lol.

Ochs Farm Market

Inside Ochs Farm Market, you will find everything grown on property (which is a lot) as well as some other locally sourced products. Here you can find fruit, vegetables, jams, jellies, honey, pies, breads, dressings, and more. With a cider mill in the barn, you can purchase homemade cider and cider donuts during the summer all the way to the end of the year. From June to November, you can also find Ochs Farm Market serving their own homemade ice cream. No dairy free versions, unfortunately.

What to Wear to U Pick Apples

There are certain items that you will see on every one of my fruit picking blog posts. And this blog post is no different. Ochs Orchard is very hilly and you will be walking in the grass and dirt, so as always comfortable shoes are a must. I absolutely love these hiking boots. They are comfortable and can get dirty. Another must is both sunscreen and bug spray. Obviously, depending on the weather you can choose to wear shorts or long pants. Here’s an important fact to know before you go.

The ticks here carry Lyme Disease.

Typically when doing any kind of farm activity, I tend to always wear long pantsleggings, or long sleeved athleisure wear. The main reason is to avoid bug bites and bugs like ticks jumping on. You may also want to wear a hat for added protection as well. After the farm, be sure to do a skin check of yourself and your family to make sure there are no ticks. If you do have a tick or ticks, follow proper technique to remove it. If you can’t then see a medical professional for removal. If you can’t remove the entire tick (any piece is still embedded) or have early symptoms of Lyme disease, then be sure to seek proper treatment from a medical professional right away, because it could lead to worse health consequences.

What to Bring to Ochs Orchard

If you haven’t gone to u pick apples before, then you will find that it can be a bit of a sticky business. I always recommend keeping wipes on hand especially if you are here with little ones. Not only for all the dirt, because it is a farm, but also when everyone is inevitably snacking on juicy apples. Next, I always recommend my Hydroflask water bottle. It keeps the ice frozen which is a must and it’s durable enough to carry around outside. For the kids, I love a Thermos bottle [girls/boys], because they have the sippy straw which I find is much easier for them. If you are wanting to make a day of it, you can definitely pack a picnic.

For my gluten free and dairy free friends, you will definitely need to bring a snack or a meal, because there isn’t a lot in the way of allergy friendly food available here.

You don’t have to worry about baskets or bags, because there are some for free to use or ones that can be purchased to take home. But you can bring your own if you want to. If you are coming here by car via road trip or live nearby, then these fun kid wagon carts are a great choice. Otherwise a stroller works well, if it can handle hills and such. I also made a blog post on my full packing list as well as one with travel accessories just for a day out, so check those out as well for more information.
