How to prepare for your day out at the maze of corn?
I may sound like a broken record by now, but if you’ve read some of my other Florida posts you’ll see a recurring theme of the few things that I always recommend for a day out. Here at the corn maze is no different, be prepared with comfortable shoes that can (and likely will) get dirty, sunscreen, and bug spray. Other important items for your day out will be hand sanitizing wipes (not just gel because it isn’t as effective at getting dirt off), sunglasses, and/or hat. For my full list, read my travel accessories blog post which details all those items that need to be packed for the kids when you are going to be out for the day.
The Maze of Corn
After seeing finding this Mount Dora corn maze online, I knew it was a must stop for the fall season. If you have to pick any corn maze in Florida to visit this fall season, then make sure to come to this corn maze near me here in Central Florida.
I was so excited to come when I was purchasing the tickets online, but nothing prepared me for actually standing at the entrance to this 6.5-acre maze. While exciting, it’s also a bit real when you have the corn maze layout out on the board in front of you and still can’t find your way out from the front entrance to the end. You can take a picture on your phone before you start for reference on where to go once you’re in the maze.
Michael is 6 feet tall, and the corn stalks stand well above that. So, for safety you are given a pole with a flag on top. In case you get lost, you can wave down one of the lookouts to help guide you through. You are also given a pamphlet with dinosaur questions (as this was the theme this year) of which the answers can help guide you in the correct direction. There are also a few stops within the corn maze to learn about dinosaurs. Thankfully, Michael is good with puzzles, and he was able to get us completely through the corn maze in 45 minutes which included my personal stops for photos. If it were me leading the way, I’d still probably be lost in there even now.
In the middle of your walk through this maze of corn, there is a chance to climb a scaffolding bridge set up for the lookouts. It is also part of the actual maze (hint, hint), but from up here you get a great view of just how massive this maze of corn really is.
If you are up for even more of a challenge, then be sure to purchase night maze tickets. Be aware this is only offered a few nights throughout their open fall corn maze season, so be sure to purchase tickets in advance so not to miss out.
Kids Activities
Tube Slide (and tube roll)
The tube slide was lots of fun. Grab your burlap sack at the bottom and climb up the stairs for your spot down this dark tube slide. Roman went down with no fear and loved it. Eden was a little scared at first, so she needed mommy to go down with her the first time. While we went a little slow at first (because I’m sitting on the burlap sack with her), once we hit the little drop, we just bumped our way down pretty fast after that. After that, it was “That’s fun! Let’s do it again!” The stairs were a little steep, so for your little ones like ours, I would recommend walking up with them. You don’t necessarily have to go down the slide (if you don’t want to), but since you’re already there you very well could.
There was also a long piece of tube near the entrance to the maze of corn. Ready for people to get in and get rolling. If you want to you could go in and start rolling the tube yourself or have someone roll you around a bit.
Kids Zip Lining
The kids zip line was a big hit. Perfect for kids! Roman went on that straight away and had so much fun. It was fast, but there’s a little haybale at the end for a soft stop. Even Eden got in on the action. The platform where they push off was a little high for her, so Michael had to hold her to navigate her start, but after that she just flew down the rest of the zip line herself. After she did it once, it was all a matter of who can run back fast enough to do it again. If you like zip lining, then check out these other great zip lining locations: Massanutten, Virginia and my blog post on the one at the Brevard Zoo right here in Florida is coming soon.
Gem Mining
I love gem mining! From locally here in Florida at Disney’s Fort Wilderness to my adventures gem mining as a kid in the mountains of North Carolina (blog post on that coming soon), it is so much fun. Now, I get to experience it all again with my own children. Long and Scott Farms has a gem mining area right as you first walk in. It’s actually free to all visitors of the property even if you didn’t pay for a day’s admission to the maze of corn.
They set it up perfectly for children too with a little platform area, so they can reach into the water themselves and sift out for fun gems or coins. Be prepared though because they will get wet and likely sandy. Thankfully there is a handwashing area (with a sink, hand soap, and towels) just behind the country market near the picnic table area.
Jump Pad
Similar to Amazing Grace Family Farms, Long and Scott Farms also has a jump pad for the kids. The nice thing about theirs in particular is that it is covered. This saves you for when the Florida heat is high. I know what you are thinking, but this is only open the months of October, November, and December. There have been years when I’ve worn shorts to Christmas Eve, so yes it can still be hot. It’s also typical for Florida to have afternoon showers, so this covers you (literally) for that type of weather as well.
Castle Playground
Long and Scott Farms also has a huge playground area. This castle playground has a bunch of slides, climbing features, walkways, and other fun activities to keep kids entertained.
At this castle playground, there are no shortage of swings either. They wrap all the way around the corn stalks, so there is plenty for everyone there.
Don’t forget to stop at the corn hole playing area, tether ball, and the sand pit with tires fit for climbing. There is even a tot lot which has a small playground area with plenty of fun activities for just the very little ones (ages 5 and under) in your family.
Rope Maze
If you want to be challenged like the maze of corn, but don’t want to feel overwhelmed and boxed in by the high corn stalks, then be sure to head over to the rope maze. Similar to the maze of corn, but with easy access to escape, you can try to wind your way through the ropes to see if you make it from start to finish.
Tree Maze
Just outside the maze of corn and right next to the rope maze is yet another maze. Get challenged in this tree maze which is in the shape of an ear of corn. It will definitely get you in the mood for the Christmas season. Long and Scott Farms has no shortage of things to do here and plenty of challenging mazes to experience. Therefore, this really is a great place for a fun day out with the kids.
Wind Tunnel
If you need another break from the heat, then cool off in this wind tunnel. Be careful though because there can be mud and water at the bottom depending on the weather. We would also say to show caution with smaller children who may be more curious of the fan.
Mini Corn Maze
Attached to the main maze of corn is the mini maze of corn, still challenging in its navigation, it just doesn’t take nearly as long to complete. We took the stroller in with us through the mini corn maze, which required us to take a different route that bypassed the scaffolding bridge. So, it took us a total of 20 minutes, but if we didn’t take the stroller and just climbed the bridge, then we could have been out much faster than that. Keep in mind, we have a double stroller, but it’s not side by side, so would only recommend a single stroller or a stroller similar to our Baby Jogger. This mini corn maze was lots of fun and if necessary, you can carry a pole in here too just in case you get lost.
Hayrides
Not included in admission
Cost: $4 per person; Age 3 and under are Free
Hop on the sweet corn express, for a hayride around this massive property. During your hayride, learn all about the origins of Long and Scott Farms, the descended family that runs it now, the other event locations on the property, as well as how they grow their vegetables and the ways they make it the best around. Enjoy this leisurely ride for great views, a little Florida history, and some fun for the whole family on the sweet corn express.
Fishing Hole
No included in admission
Cost: $2 per fishing pole
For a small additional fee, you can get a ticket for the use of a fishing pole as well as bait. Now while you certainly can catch fish in this little pond and others have, it does require some patience. Something not many 4 years old’s have, so Roman didn’t last very long waiting there for a bite. But if you do have some patience for it, you may just get a little bite. Just make sure you don’t feed the gator (don’t worry it’s not real, but definitely looks like it).
Photo Opportunities
Scattered throughout the property are plenty of places for photo opportunities. Even just the farm itself is a beautiful background. So, don’t miss one of these spots to capture the day’s fun memories.
Dining at Long and Scott Farms
With my gluten free and dairy free life, it’s important to make sure I come prepared to places like this that may not be allergy friendly. We went on a Sunday when the hours were shorter between 12-5pm, so we packed a lunch and ate as soon as they opened the gate. In this way, we made sure we were full and not hungry while we’re out and about walking around. They do have a food stand on the property as well as the Country Cafe, but many of the items were not allergy friendly.
Years ago, we used to come to the Zellwood Corn Festival not far from where Long and Scott Farms is now. I still remember my dad and I eating a ridiculous amount of corn and then going on a spiny fair ride (not a good combination). Although, they stopped the Zellwood Corn Festival many years ago, this area is still known for its sweet corn. Sold here either grilled or boiled, don’t forget to purchase the Zellwood corn they are known for. They also have a Kona Ice food truck which has all allergen free flavors. Perfect food for a gluten free and dairy free snack time.
Country Market
Before you leave, make sure you pass through the country market. Not only can you purchase as much corn as your heart desires which is picked fresh daily from the farm, but you can also purchase pumpkins here too.
In the outside part of the market, there are plenty of fresh vegetables that are all locally grown or sourced, so don’t miss out. Still by far, my favorite was the Jean-Talon market in Montreal, Canada where the colors of the fruits and vegetables were like none other. Here at Long and Scott Farms country market, you can purchase local honey, jams, jellies, preserves, and some memorabilia like shirts and hats from your adventures in the maze. There is also the Country Cafe located inside the country market with indoor cooled seating for eating, but also with a place to purchase foods like sandwiches, wraps, hot dogs, salads, and drinks.
