One of the first and best things to do in St. Augustine with kids is to see the most iconic St. Augustine landmark. We (locals) call it the fort, but it’s also known as the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Located right along the waterfront of St. Augustine this fort was used as a defense during colonial times. Now when you visit the fort you can see costumed re-enactors, cannon firings (on Saturdays and Sundays), and musket drills which will help bring that history to life. The kids can explore the maze of different rooms and battlements while learning about the fort’s past. Don’t forget to make it to the top of the fort for some beautiful aerial St. Augustine and Mantanzas Bay views!
The fort also has sprawling property that is perfect for a picnic so pack your own lunch or grab some grub from one of the many eateries nearby and head to the hills of the fort.
2. Visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

Another one of the iconic and best things to do in St. Augustine with kids is visit the alligator farm. Despite it’s name, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm has more than just alligators. This historic zoo is home to all different types of crocodile species, snakes, turtles, tortoises, frogs, lizards, birds, and more. There are daily wildlife shows, where you can watch alligators being fed as well as learn about the park’s other inhabitants, like the exotic birds, lemurs, and snakes. If the kids still have energy to spare, then head over to the kid’s area which has a playground and covered areas to break from the heat or eat a snack.
For an additional cost, you can also do an animal encounter or a behind the scenes tour. For the bravest (and ages 8 and up and over 52”) you can even zip line over the alligator lagoon for an aerial view of these incredibly dangerous creatures!

Honestly the iconic things to do in St. Augustine with kids just don’t stop! Before Plymouth Rock and Jamestown, the now Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park was the first Spanish settlement in the United States. Here on this sprawling 15 acre waterfront property, you’ll be able to see recreations of a Timucuan village and learn about the people that lived here. Kids (and adults alike) will love to see the blacksmith, canon firing, and firearms demonstrations that take place here as well other educational exhibits.
But what this place is known for you’ll find inside the coquina spring house building. Considered the first attraction of Florida, the legendary spring which Ponce de León believed could grant eternal youth is still here. And since it’s a real Florida spring, you can take an actual sip. Just another fun and unique St. Augustine experience.

7. Take in a Show at Limelight Theatre or the St. Augustine Amphitheater
- For showtimes, costs, and tickets: visit the Limelight and Amphitheater websites.
If you are looking for a night out or a night of entertainment, then head to the Limelight Theatre where you can see an assortment of live performances from plays to musicals. The Limelight Theatre is a smaller venue offering community theater type productions that are more personal and intimate.
The St. Augustine Amphitheater on the other hand hosts larger events, like concerts, comedy shows, and more. St. Augustine Amphitheater is completely covered, but is considered an open-air venue, so keep that in mind when visiting. Both locations offer different types of entertainment, but both are unique ways to immerse yourself in the culture of St. Augustine.
8. Visit any of the 27 St. Augustine Museums
Did you know that St. Augustine even had that many museums? St. Augustine boasts the most museums out of any other city in Florida. There is so much history and culture here in St. Augustine, Florida and the museums are just a small example of that.
My blog post on the museums in St. Augustine, Florida covers all you’ll need to know. With hours, admission costs, and details about what you can see and experience there, you’ll have everything you need to know to better decide which ones fit your family’s style and interest.

There are several outfitters in St. Augustine that offer carriage rides throughout the historic downtown, by the Bridge of Lions and along A1A. Kids 10 and under often ride free (check with your outfitter) and carriages usually hold up to 6 riders. The beauty of St. Augustine cannot be taken in properly through the windows of a car, and a carriage ride allows you to step back in time and truly immerse yourself in the history of the place – plus the kids will love it! This is especially fun during the holiday season when the place is lit up for Nights of Lights.
